Project Empower: The hardest challenge on the planet?

Damian Browne and Fergus Farrell are attempting one of the hardest challenges on the planet. Two men and one boat vs 5,000 kilometres of open water, 10m waves, giant eddies, and ferocious storms.

Termed “Project Empower”, their goal is to break the world record for the unsupported pairs row across the North Atlantic from New York City to Galway. This West to East route from New York to Europe is the most difficult of all Atlantic crossings, with only 34% of attempts ever completing it. Only two boats have ever landed in Ireland, with its more northern latitude making it a difficult arrival point.

The current record of 55 days and 13 hours has stood for over 120 years.

15 hours of rowing per day, burning 10,000+ calories.

The most extreme nutritional demands.

If you want to push the boundaries of the human body and break records in the process, you need to perfect every aspect of performance. For Damian and Fergus, nutrition will play a crucial part in the success of their expedition. They’ve chosen to partner with Radix Nutrition to fuel them for this attempt and give them the best chance of achieving their goal.

The trans-Atlantic crossing is far from a normal event. The pair will expend over 10,000 calories each per day, rowing for up to 15 hours daily for almost two months. When you’re pushing the body to such extreme limits, having the right fuel can be the difference between optimal performance and utter failure and exhaustion.

With the introduction of personalised nutrition, we’ve revolutionised our approach to nutritional design and strategy. When absolute performance is on the line, we’re not willing to leave anything to chance.

Our approach to fuelling the extreme.

Nutrition is not one size fits all. Demands can vary depending on several factors - your body, your goals, your activity, and even your genetics. That’s why we believe in a personalised nutritional approach.

Using the latest smartwatch and wearable technology, we’ll be monitoring key biometric and performance data from Damian throughout his entire row. This will include tracking the time he spends rowing, distance travelled, speed, stroke rate, heart rate, respiration rate, calories expended, sleep data and more.

Analysing these metrics can give us a level of insight unlike anything that’s been recorded for an event like this before. We'll use this data to make real time decisions, adjusting the nutritional strategy for Damian and Fergus, and giving feedback throughout the event.

The future of performance nutrition.

Take your nutrition to the next level.

Nutrition is not one size fits all. Demands can vary depending on several factors - your body, your goals, your activity, and even your genetics. That’s why we believe in a personalised approach.

With personalised nutrition, we aim to work with you to develop and implement the most effective nutritional strategy possible. No matter who you are or what you do.

Developing an in-depth understanding of our athletes and the workload demands of their activity allows us to take the guesswork out of nutritional strategy and design. From energy balance, to macronutrient ratios, to micronutrient targets and packaging, we can provide tailored products and strategies that are perfected for unique and varied applications.

We see this as key to maximising performance and recovery, and the future of performance nutrition.
